Understanding the Spine: Areas and Functions

The human spine is divided into four main regions: the cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and sacral areas. The cervical spine, located in the neck, consists of seven vertebrae and supports the head while allowing for its movement. Below that, the thoracic spine contains twelve vertebrae connected to the ribcage, providing stability and protection for the organs in the chest. The lumbar spine, made up of five larger vertebrae in the lower back, bears much of the body’s weight and allows for flexibility and movement. Finally, the sacral region includes the sacrum and coccyx (tailbone), which are fused bones at the base of the spine that connect to the pelvis and support the body's core structure.

What Could Be Causing My Back or Neck Pain?

Back pain can be caused by a variety of factors, ranging from muscle strain and poor posture to more serious underlying conditions. Common causes include lifting heavy objects improperly, sitting or standing for long periods with poor alignment, or sudden awkward movements that strain the muscles and ligaments. Degenerative conditions such as arthritis, herniated discs, and spinal stenosis can also lead to chronic back pain. Other contributors include obesity, lack of exercise, stress, and even sleeping on a mattress that doesn't provide proper support. In some cases, back pain may be related to structural issues in the spine or injuries from accidents or sports.

Muscle or ligament strain – Often caused by heavy lifting, sudden movements, or poor posture.

  • Herniated or bulging discs – Discs in the spine can press on nerves, causing pain.
  • Degenerative Disc Disease - spinal discs lose flexibility and cushioning, leading to back pain, stiffness, or nerve irritation.
  • Arthritis or Spinal Stenosis – Osteoarthritis and other forms of arthritis can affect the spine and cause stiffness and discomfort.
  • Spinal irregularities – Conditions like scoliosis or spondylolisthesis can lead to misalignment and pain.
  • Sedentary lifestyle or poor physical condition – Weak core muscles and lack of regular movement contribute to chronic back pain.
  • Traumatic injury or accidents – May damage the spine through sudden impact, leading to fractures, disc herniation, or nerve compression.

Back & Neck Pain Treatment Options

Back pain is one of the most common medical complaints, affecting people of all ages and lifestyles. It can range from a dull, constant ache to sudden, sharp discomfort that limits movement and interferes with daily activities. While occasional back pain is often the result of overuse or strain, persistent or severe pain may indicate an underlying condition affecting the spine, muscles, or nerves. Common back pain conditions include herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, arthritis, and spondylolisthesis. Understanding the cause of back pain is the first step toward effective treatment and long-term relief.

Non-Surgical Treatments

Advanced Surgical Procedures

When Is Spine Surgery Necessary?

Not all spinal injuries require surgery. In fact, most spine conditions can be effectively managed with nonsurgical treatments such as physical therapy, medications, activity modification, or injections. Surgery is usually considered only when conservative methods fail to relieve pain or restore function, or if there’s a serious issue like spinal instability, or severe nerve compression. If your FASO spine specialist determines that surgery is not necessary for your condition, we’ll explore non-invasive treatment options with you—such as physical therapy, stretching exercises, medication, or other conservative approaches tailored to your specific needs and overall health.

  • When conservative treatments no longer work
  • Severe nerve compression or mobility issues
  • Loss of quality of life

Why Choose FASO for Back & Neck Pain Treatment?

Most patients with back pain do not require surgery to achieve relief and improved function. At FASO, we focus on conservative treatments first, including physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, activity modification, stretching, and targeted injections to reduce pain and inflammation. These noninvasive approaches are effective for the majority of individuals. However, when back pain persists despite these measures, our board-certified, fellowship-trained spine specialists offer advanced surgical solutions, including minimally invasive techniques designed to reduce recovery time and optimize long-term outcomes.
